Rousseau versus Rameau
Holland Baroque Society speelt tijdens Festival Oude Muziek deze zomer het prikkelende programma Rousseau versus Rameau. De confrontatie tussen de uit de mode rakende barok en het opkomende classicisme - op het scherpst van de snede! Een muzikale confrontatie tussen twee generaties: de grote, oude operavernieuwer en de jonge, scherpgepende filosoof. Hevige muziektektoniek als vertrekpunt voor een nieuw seizoen oude muziek!
Gespeeld worden delen uit ondermeer Rameau's opera's Les Incas, Les Indes galantes en Les fêtes de Polymnie. Ouvertures, dansen, wilde coloratuuraria’s als de Air de la Folie uit Platée maar ook sprankelende miniatuurtjes als de préludes uit Les Boréades en Castor & Pollux.

Stem op Holland Baroque Society!
Rabobank Utrecht stelt via het Rabo Dichtbijfonds een deel van haar winst beschikbaar aan instellingen uit de regio die voldoen aan de criteria van het fonds, zoals Holland Baroque Society. Instellingen die in aanmerking willen komen, kunnen een filmpje insturen waarop vervolgens gestemd kan worden. Holland Baroque Society heeft ook een filmpje ingezonden, eentje over de door het ensemble georganiseerde educatieprojecten.
Hieronder is het filmpje in kwestie te zien, waarin duidelijk wordt gemaakt hoe belangrijk de educatieprojecten zijn voor de musici van Holland Baroque Society - maar vooral ook voor jonge kinderen! Holland Baroque Society nodigt u natuurlijk graag uit er op te stemmen. En zegt het voort, want er zijn al filmpjes met 600 stemmen, die we natuurlijk moeten en zullen inhalen!

Nieuwe educatie-site gelanceerd!
Holland Baroque Society lanceerde onlangs een educatie-site, speciaal voor de belangrijkste doelgroep van deze projecten: de kinderen zélf! Kijk opwww.hbskids.nl voor het resultaat. Basje is er om je welkom te heten en te begeleiden, iedere dag paraat en iedere dag weer in een andere, frisse kleur. Vermaak jezelf met spelletjes en filmpjes en wees van harte welkom met opmerkingen en vragen. Veel plezier!
ArtEZ Operaproject
Meer dan 50 studenten van het ArtEZ Conservatorium beleven op vrijdag 25 juni tijdens het Festival ZwArt de première van hun operaproductie met de eenakters Dido & Aeneas en Pan & Syrinx. Solisten, koor en kamerorkest voeren onder leiding van Klaas Stok een moderne bewerking uit van deze twee klassieke opera's. Ook leden van Holland Baroque Society verlenen hun medewerking en de regie is in handen van Claudia Christern. Behalve in Zwolle staat de productie in Arnhem, Hengelo en Deventer.
In zowel Dido & Aeneas van H. Purcell (1659-1695) als Pan & Syrinx van J.E. Galliard (1687-1749) staat de kwetsbaarheid van de verliefde mens centraal. Het conflict tussen natuur, lust, liefde en instinct enerzijds en het beheersen van deze driften anderzijds; liefde en kwetsbaarheid versus maagdelijkheid en onafhankelijkheid.
Regisseuse Claudia Christern schetst in haar interpretatie van beide werken de ontwikkeling van een groep jonge opstandige meiden. Deze angry young women willen om verschillende redenen maagdelijk blijven en zich onthouden van sex en liefde, dus ook van het moederschap dat je aan kinderen kluistert. Zij vormen daarvoor een soort jeugdbende. Het moderne karakter van deze productie wordt nog eens versterkt door het decor van digitale beeldcomposities, dat is ontworpen door docent Douwe Dijkstra en studenten van ArtEZ Art & Design.

Concert in Barcelona bijna afgelast door aswolk
De aswolk die nog steeds boven grote delen van Europa waart, verhinderde zaterdag 8 mei bijna dat Holland Baroque Society op tijd in Barcelona zou zijn voor een optreden in het Festival de Música Antiga de Barcelona. Een alternatieve route langs Madrid bood uitkomst; Holland Baroque Society was nipt op tijd om Psalmós, het project met violiste Veronika Skuplik, succesvol ten uitvoer te brengen. Psalmós wordt van 10 tot en met 17 oktober trouwens ook gewoon in Nederland uitgevoerd, kijk in de agenda voor de data en locaties. Knappe aswolk die u verhindert daarbij aanwezig te zijn!
Holland Baroque Society ensemble in residence Vredenburg Utrecht
Vredenburg Utrecht en Holland Baroque Society gaan een meerjarige samenwerking aan. Vanaf komend seizoen heeft Holland Baroque Society als ensemble in residence een eigen serie in Vredenburg Leeuwenbergh. De serie bestaat in seizoen 2010-2011 uit vijf concerten met gastmusici als Monica Huggett, Vincent Dumestre en Miloš Valent.
Op zaterdagavond 24 april bezegelden Vredenburg Utrecht en Holland Baroque Society deze veelbelovende samenwerking. Toen vond in Vredenburg Leeuwenbergh een goedbezocht concert plaats van Holland Baroque Society met stervioliste Rachel Podger. Ars Retorica Workshop
A workshop with Judy Tarling and Holland Baroque Society.
Holland Baroque Society is pleased to announce a workshop on rhetoric in music, to be held on Tuesday morning, April 13. The workshop will be led by Judy Tarling, author of the well-known book The Weapons of Rhetoric, and a specialist in the subject. Members of Holland Baroque Society - themselves preparing a programme on rhetoric in music, Ars Retorica - will accompany the lecture with musical examples.
Baroque music and Rhetoric are intrinsically linked. Just as with the spoken and written word, musicians have sought ways to optimise the use of emotions and gestures to present a convincing story in music: rhetoric was an omnipresent and essential element in 18th-century musical composition and performance. This project will demonstrate just how a piece of music was composed and performed according to the techniques of good argumentation.

This project will demonstrate just how a piece of music was composed and performed according to the techniques of good argumentation.Psalmos
The same tune in church and the pub? In 1988 André Hazes sang "Wij houden van Oranje" ["We love the Dutch football team..."] to the tune of "Auld Lang Syne". And in 2010, this tune is sung in churches with the text "Where love brings people together". The same tune in stadium and before the altar!
As far back as the early 17th century this was normal practice. Take for example the folk-tune "Une jeune Fillette". In 1610 composer Eustache du Caurroy wrote a collection of 42 fantasies, a number of which are based on the melody. It is a sung allemande, a dance with a folk-story for text: a young, well-behaved girl, noble of spirit and beautiful, is sold into a nunnery against her will. The song is her plaint. And the same melody is lent a whole new meaning when used in a religious context: "I will not abandon God, as he abandons me not".

Ode to Utrecht
Shanghai World Expo 2010
Several of Utrecht's cultural institutions will soon be combining to mount a multi-day presentation at the Shanghai World Expo 2010. Poet Ruben van Gogh, Holland Baroque Society, and the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten/Faculteit Kunst, Media and Technology (KMT) (College of the Arts/Faculty of Art, Media and Technology) will present an Ode to historic and contemporary Utrecht in word, music and image.
Van Gogh, Utrecht's city poet, takes inspiration from some familiar – as well as some less well-known – sites inside and outside the city, such as the University centre De Uithof, the forts along the waterlinie (the historical "water-line" defences), the former university dissection hall at the Berenkuil ("Bear-pit"), and Amerongen Castle. The locations have one theme in common: Utrecht as an international melting-pot of knowledge and culture. Van Gogh will compose poems about each site, to be translated and presented in Chinese as well as Dutch.
Images of each location, together with the poems, will form the material for multimedia presentations by the KMT students of the Utrecht College of the Arts, and Holland Baroque Society will select accompanying music to complete the presentation of the Ode. In this way, a musical, poetic, pictorial and – literally and figuratively – moving portrait of Utrecht will be created.
