CD4 – double CD

Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), La Cetra – 12 Violin Concertos opus 9

Musical leader: Rachel Podger

The fourth CD
of Holland Baroque Society! This time we played with great enthusiasm music of Vivaldi with Rachel Podger. It was a great adventure, because every concert opens a new musical book. What a fascinating composer is Vivaldi. Who writes sentences of only two and a half measure. Who easefully halves a theme and then a moment later, almost without any preparation, goes to a new key! Similarly are the violin concertos on this CD: fresh, full of surprises but never capricious or unnatural. We were surprised by the Concerto IV where he uses the forte (loud) chords in combination with the piano (soft) sixteenth motion. An excellent opportunity for an orchestra as Holland Baroque Society to demonstrate her force in both the ‘large’ and the ‘small’ music. Grazie mille, Antonio Vivaldi!

Barbaric Beauty: Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) & 18th c. Dance Manuscripts
Musical leader: Miloš Valent; Soloist: Jan Rokyta

Everyone knows Telemann perfectly controlled the French and Italian style. Numerous ensembles, we too, played music in this style. With 'Barbaric Beauty' we do something very different: we concentrate on Telemann's Polish Style. At least that is how he typified the form he developed based on the music he discoverd at the borderland of Poland and Hungary. It was at the beginning of his career, he was barely 25 years old, when he heard the sounds that would inspire him for the rest of his life. Telemann worte in his autobiography: "In 1704 I was appointed as Kapellmeister by His Excellency Mr. Erdmann von Promnitz in Sorau (Zary). When the Court resided six months in Plesse and Krakow, I became acquainted with the Polish music and the music of the Hannaken. This in all its barbaric beauty."

Hoes CD Telemann

CD2
Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), Ouverture and Concerti

Musical leader: Alexis Kossenko

These distinctive concerti for various combinations of solo instruments reveal a wide diversity of sound colours, both of the individual instruments and of the groups.
Although the pieces belong to the Concerto Grosso genre, Telemann gave each their own character, yet without once having to repeat himself.
Holland Baroque Society worked with the young French traverso virtuoso Alexis Kossenko for this recording. He studied chiefly in Nice, Paris and Amsterdam. Alongside his work as an orchestral musician and soloist, Alexis is in great demand as a chamber musician, and performs with many renowned ensembles throughout Europe.

Hoes CD Muffat

CD1
Georg Muffat (1653-1704), Concerti

Musical leader: Matthew Halls

Holland Baroque Society's first recording reflects "Europe", and Georg Muffat was certainly a European avant la lettre. He was born in the French Alps, had a Scottish father, received his musical training in Paris, studied law in Ingolstadt, Germany, worked in Vienna, Prague and Salzburg, and travelled to Rome on a study trip.
The style of the concertos on this recording is known as "Gemischter Geschmack": Muffat combines in them the products of the French, German and Italian musical traditions.
For their first CD, Holland Baroque Society worked with the English harpsichord player, organist, and conductor Matthew Halls, who studied music at Oxford University. He has since played with various leading ensembles and orchestras, and is the artistic director of Retrospect Ensemble.
