This Night 2011

Christmas Concert for all ages.

‘Jesus is always born on Christmas night.’ Stan (8) on This Night by Holland Baroque Society.

The very first Christmas night is praised in countless pieces of music from all over the world. They tell us how cold and dark that night was, how the shepherds were surprised by the visit of an angel, who told them the news about the newborn baby and how the silence was broken by the first cries of this child. Music leads us along the magical Christmas story. In the Beatles’ song Black Bird the birds sing a totally new song. In the Arabic Christmas song Nabi Al Mahabi by Majida el Roumi we can hear how people in the Middle East celebrate Christmas. And Bach gathers us in silent praise around the manger.

‘And this is how it happened that night: the child was laid in the manger, the animals and the shepherds surrounded it quietly. And over the stable the Christmas star shone brightly. It was a Christmas night when all this happened. A Christmas night long, long ago. It was the very first Christmas night.’
