Early Music Festival 2012

Musical leader: Andreas Arend, lute
Soprano: Stefanie True
Bass: Andreas Wolf

The first name of the 17th-century Dutch composer Buns (1642-1716) remains unknown. What makes his life and music unique for The Netherlands is that he lived and worked in a Catholic enclave, a so-called Free State. He joined the Carmelite order in 1659, and adopted the name of Benedictus a Sancto Josepho. In 1670 he moved to Boxmeer in North Brabant, becoming the sub-prior in the Carmelite monastery, founded in 1653, and was its organist from 1679 onwards. On the title-page of his opus 9, published in 1699 he declares himself "Aulae Bergis phonascus et organista – “singing master (ie kapellmeister) and organist at the Bergh court”.

The pieces include motets, liturgical works, requiems, masses, vocal and instrumental dialogues, and instrumental sonatas.
