Johann Sebastian Bach and Joseph Johann Fux: grand masters of fugues, canons, and the wondrous world of the counterpoint.

But what exactly is a fugue? HBS investigates the ‘subject’, the ‘dux’, the ‘comes’, the strict rules and the loopholes in the musical laws of the fugue. Bach and Fux prove that those rigid rules can result in music which is all about emotion. The mind is the servant of the soul. An example is Fux’s suite on the caresses of the night – a compelling piece, which at the same time consistently observes the laws of the fugue.
